Car-Part.com was co-founded by an Auto Recycling Family frustrated by the proprietary nature of their parts management system. The systems on the market excluded body shops and repair facilities and they excluded auto recyclers who did not share the same management system. The systems were also expensive because of satellites and long distance calls.
Car-Part.com was also co-founded by the president of an Internet development and web hosting company, Phoneware.com. Phoneware.com designed a global secure Intranet for the United Nations. They also built a web hosting facility for Viacom. The facility served 37 million hits per day for the MTV, Blockbuster, Comedy Central, Nick-at-Nite, Showtime, and Mike Tyson web sites. Phoneware.com also built their own data center hosting over 1 million hits per day for the Sesame Street web sites.
Car-Part.com acquired the Phoneware.com team and their 4th generation web hosting software and data center. The result is a system for Auto Recyclers that has the security of the United Nations Intranet, the performance and reliability of the Viacom web sites, and the simplicity of Sesame Street, all priced for Auto Recyclers.
Car-Part.com's co-founders realized that an Internet-based system would open up recyclers' inventory to anyone with a computer and a browser. It would also eliminate expensive long distance bills. Car-Part.com was the first company to offer an inventory search capability for recyclers' web sites. Car-Part.com went live in May of 1998.
Understanding the importance of the independence and brand for each auto recycler, Car-Part.com implemented a process whereby they create an Internet site for each recycler at a very low cost and placed the recycler's inventory on its site. Additionally the recycler has the option to add its inventory to the Car-Part.com web site.
